A Rude Question

How on earth did the team from Newfoundland/Labrador qualify for the 2011 Scott Tournament of Hearts? They were clearly outmatched by the rest of the field in ability, and it seems a miracle they won even one game in the tournament. Did they just get lucky in the provincial playdowns, or does NF/L have no one better to challenge them?

Well they were probably the best team in Newfoundland/Labrador.
This is THE problem with the Scotties and the Brier.
And as a statistician would expect, you can get some wild variance comparing the men's and women's fields.
Brad Gushue has provably one of the best teams. Suzanne Gaudet has a team one has to respect from their first year in the Scott (not Scotties back then), but who can name a men's team from PEI?
Each of these tournaments is very prone to some very unbalanced competition at the low ends.
Related, of course, is that these tournaments deny entry to teams that would perform very well (I miss McCarville, and will miss Koe at the Brier).
Yes it is tradition. Some traditions are best updated.
